Drop caps / large initial capitals

Hi all I thought I would share this as we are typing rather a lot of books lately.

This is what's known as a Drop Cap, (large initial capital) and is done in the following way in MS Word.

1.Click in the paragraph that you want to begin with a drop cap.  The paragraph must contain text.
2.On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Drop Cap.

3.Click Dropped or In margin.

Wow, I didn't know about this. What does one do this for in a manuscript?

Hi Damaria thanks for the comment. I do believe this is a rather old fashioned thing, but the book we are typing has a large initial capital on the first letter of every chapter.
